What is it about El Cajon that attracts great dining institutions? It certainly isn’t the burden they carry in the form of a 10% sales tax. Beef ‘n Bun -- along with Ali Baba and the Yogurt Mill -- is one of San Diego County's finest eating institutions within El Cajon. A humble title, but one worth having.
If you only go to beef n bun once in your life and vow never to return to the Cajon, please order a dang ole milkshake. In particular, order a chocolate peanut butter milkshake. What’s that? You don't like chocolate and peanut butter? Oh good. It’s usually harder than that to figure out who I should NEVER EVER HANG OUT WITH.
Chocolate peanut butter shake. It can't be said enough. You’ll be scraping the residual peanut butter off the sides of your bucket-‘o-popcorn-sized cup. You may even be one of those weirdoes (who knew that “weirdoes” was properly pluralized with an “es”?) who dip fries in their shake. As a reward for your weirdness, you receive a fry covered in peanut butter.
The burgers here are standard and very flavorful, with the usual toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle). The fries are, uh, boring. BUT, if you don't mind a ton of grease, they do have some serious fried zucchini. It's not like little nubs of zucchini either. It’s we-sliced-a-zucchini-in-fourths-lengthwise zucchini, and greasy to the point of clawing out of your to-go bag. This will be an attribute to some, a deterrent for others.
The bacon cheeseburger is very nice. But you know what would make it better? A CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER SHAKE. In your heart, you know it's right.
