the casbah is where the uner-21 kids are all dying to go once they shotgun their first legally purchased beer. i mean that in a good way.

it's not on the pulse of san diego music; it IS the pulse. if you want to know who's hip and playing a show in town, just check the casbah's line-up. the hold steady? pipettes? they book names that would sell out at soma or the erstwhile 'canes (peace be upon it), but the bands would much rather take the cred and the crowd that comes with playing at the casbah.

and although big names are a significant draw, you can't underscore how much the casbah has done for fledgling/emerging local and touring acts. the casbah is a place that loves music as much as it loves music lovers. these guys will give anyone a chance, which is surprising since their reputation would allow them to get away with gauging smaller bands with cost-prohibitive pay-for-play terms.

all this passion really comes through in the product. if you haven't found a venue in san diego worth the urine you mark it with, i highly recommend the casbah.

The Casbah is a San Diego institution. Their bookers do a great job; there doesn't seem to be a Casbah litmus test for artists beyond just "be good." One night you may get a veteran folksy singer/songwriter, the next night a brand new sludge metal band. The venue itself is a pretty typical rock club - and intimate enough that you'll feel like you spent quality time with the band (for folks in LA, this sometimes means a chance to see a band in a smaller venue in exchange for what really isn't a bad drive)
