Did I say I "liked" this place? Well, I meant to say I LOVE this place. I want to click *that* button.

I ordered a Thai iced tea. "With boba?" Uh, yeah, with boba. Awesome. "With soy or regular?" Well, let's try soy, since this place seems to emphasize the quality of their vegan offerings. I then ordered the spicy basil with "chicken". The "chicken" was in quotes, as it was gluten-free and soy-based. They serve no meat or eggs in this place. Impressive and risky. Or is it?

To tangent for a second, I thought about the lack of meat and eggs and realized that this is an extremely safe play; when's the last time anyone heard of a soy recall? Or anyone got E Coli from undercooked vegetables? Go ahead and look it up to present evidence, Naysayer Nancy, but the fact is, the risk — which is to say, liability — is pretty low when the product is vegetarian/vegan. It seems all the risk in the product lies with its overall taste.

And so I mete my expectations accordingly. Vegetarian food is usually at its worst when mimicking meat-based meals. For example, "chicken". My bowl of spicy basil "chicken" with brown rice (by request) was quickly upon me.

Oh my. This is really good. It's a very light sauce, not drowning with any overpowering MSG-hangover flavors, but nicely spicy (ordered at medium heat) and hearty. The rice was well-cooked, and the "chicken" was... fantastic! What on earth? The texture of this mock meat was uncanny in how toothy it was. Not chewy or grainy, but cooked to the right toughness and seasoned with restraint. Fantastic, I say again.

This meal ran me about $12 with the tea. I regret none of it. I'm fully stuffed and super happy to know a place like this exists. The trick to good vegan/vegetarian food is to completely eliminate the "where's the beef?" moment so present in many U.S. meals. At Sipz, there is nothing missing. I like it when I can eat something purely for nutritional reasons — for some, they may even be ethically imperative reasons — and not feel like it's being fed to me; to not get bored or defiant. Outstanding meal.
