It is a hell of a disappointing truism, that the further you move north -- even while still within San Diego County -- the worse the Mexican food becomes. And now, here I am... in Rancho Bernardo.
And now, as a result, my options are basically Jalapeno's. It's not terrible Mexican food, but it's not terribly Mexican and it is pretty overpriced (something that appears to be a symptom of MANY restaurants in North County). I got a breakfast burrito for $5 and got about half the burrito I expected. Maybe it's because they're concerned for my health. Well, hey buddy, you let me worry about that stuff.
The other night, I ordered the carne asada burrito AL DIABLA! and... it was steak with some heat, wrapped in a tortilla. It was good, but I can easily dish out several other taco shop names that can top that burrito, in quality, size and price.
And to think, in college, all the NoCo kids would talk about how much they missed Jalapeno's. Not feeling it. Certainly beyond understanding when they had come a good half-hour south and were clearly closer to BETTER Mexican food, and yet, they continued to pine and brag about Jalapeno's.
Meh. I miss Central San Diego.
