Fully on display in Yesenia's California burrito is clarity and focus. Those attributes important in every San Diego burrito, and lost on the entire rest of the world.
I bite in to find moist carne, toothy fries, a generous amount of sour cream, cheese, and little else. And you know what? It tastes so good.
The green salsa from Yesenia's is a bit of a surprise, packing more of a straight heat punch than its red cousin, which was much smokier, much heartier and suppressed some of its own heat. I used both, alternating the salsas every three or so bites. They were both good.
The most important aspect of this humble meal from Yesenia's was that it came from the same strip mall that boasted Jalapeno's, which is where all the Poway/NoCo kids are running off to for their less-than-southern-county burrito experiences. And in a heartbeat, I would always choose Yesenia's over Jalapeno's. That's why Yesenia's is important: it's the better burrito in this area. Not the greatest burrito, or even close, but certainly one of the best in the burrito-less void of Carmel Mountain Ranch and North County.
